Apple acquires Ed-Tech Startup LearnSprout

LearnSprout, which is a San Francisco based Startup has been acquired by Apple Inc. . LearnSprout is a three year old Ed-Tech Startup which creates  software for schools and teachers to track students’ performance.

Most of the acquisitions by apple happen behind the doors with their purpose rarely shared with media. It is believed that the latest round of acquisition is directed towards competing with the low cost chromebook laptops. Apple is currently working on education tools for the iPad, which will allow students to see interactive lessons, track their progress, and share tablet computers with peers.

According to LearnSprout’s website, more than 2,500 school districts in 42 U.S. states use LearnSprout’s software.

LearnSprout has raised more than $4 million from investors, including Andreessen Horowitz and Formation 8. Bloomberg LP, the owner of Bloomberg News, is an investor in Andreessen Horowitz. One of the competitors of LearnSprout is clever , which has raised more than $40 million from Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and other investors.

According to a CNBC report, chromebooks have taken over the battle in filling US classrooms and investing in Ed-Tech Startups is an obvious bid by apple to regain the lost ground.
