Grounded, a Detroit-based advanced manufacturing and mobility company specializing in modular electric vehicles, has raised $5 million in seed funding and is expanding into a new 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Detroit.

The move represents a major step in the company’s growth strategy, increasing its production capacity by approximately 1,900% and positioning Grounded to serve a broader commercial fleet market.

The company is also preparing to launch a new vehicle-agnostic box platform designed to extend its software-defined, modular vehicle architecture beyond its existing electric van platform. The new system will support both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, opening the door to a wider range of commercial and fleet applications.

Grounded Expands Detroit Manufacturing Footprint

Grounded’s new Detroit facility is expected to significantly increase its ability to manufacture vehicles at commercial scale. Production at the facility is scheduled to begin in August 2026, with capacity expected to ramp throughout 2027.

“This new facility is a turning point for Grounded,” said Sam Shapiro, Founder and CEO of Grounded. “We built this company to bring smart, modular electric vehicles to the businesses and institutions that keep our cities running.”

The expansion will enable Grounded to meet growing demand from enterprise, municipal and other fleet customers while continuing to develop its modular vehicle technology.

The company expects the expansion to create 15 new jobs across manufacturing, engineering and related functions.

$5 Million Seed Funding Will Support Manufacturing and R&D

Grounded plans to use its $5 million seed round across three primary areas.

First, the company will establish the manufacturing line for its new box platform, including investments in tooling, production equipment and research and development.

Second, the funding will support the build-out of the larger Detroit manufacturing facility.

Third, Grounded will expand its manufacturing, engineering and sales teams to support increased production and commercial growth.

The new investment comes as demand for specialized fleet vehicles continues to grow across industries that rely on mobile operations.

New Box Platform Targets Commercial Fleet Market

A central part of Grounded’s expansion strategy is its new vehicle-agnostic box platform.

The platform builds on the company’s existing software-defined and modular vehicle architecture, allowing a common underlying platform to be configured for different commercial applications.

Rather than developing a completely new vehicle for every customer requirement, Grounded’s adaptive customization technology is designed to enable multiple configurations from a common platform.

This approach could help fleet operators deploy purpose-built vehicles while allowing manufacturers to streamline production.

Grounded Chief Product Officer Nadia Meyer said demand is increasing across sectors including food and beverage franchises, field operations, public safety and mobile healthcare.

The company’s new platform is intended to address these applications while accelerating manufacturing and expanding its addressable commercial market.

Grounded Vehicles Already Serve Multiple Industries

Grounded has already deployed its electric fleet vehicles across a variety of commercial and institutional applications.

Its customers include Colgate, Nokia, Coffee Fellows, Wayne State University Medical, PetEvolution and Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies.

Applications include mobile medical and dental services, food service and other field operations that require specialized vehicles capable of supporting changing operational requirements.

The company’s modular approach is particularly relevant for businesses that need vehicles customized around specific workflows rather than conventional mass-market vehicle configurations.

From Electric RV Startup to Fleet Technology Company

Grounded’s latest expansion marks a broader evolution in its business.

The company initially gained attention as an electric RV startup, developing modular electric vehicles aimed at adventure and recreational customers. It will continue producing fully electric RVs for direct-to-consumer customers.

At the same time, Grounded is increasing its focus on commercial and government fleets looking to electrify operations while retaining the flexibility offered by purpose-built vehicles.

This strategy gives Grounded exposure to both the consumer electric vehicle market and the potentially larger commercial fleet opportunity.

Detroit Emerges as a Key Manufacturing Base

The decision to expand within Detroit also highlights the city’s growing role in advanced mobility and manufacturing.

Kevin Johnson, President and CEO of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, said Grounded’s growth demonstrates how companies emerging from Detroit’s innovation ecosystem can develop into larger manufacturing operations.

Grounded originated from Newlab, an innovation hub supporting technology and advanced manufacturing companies.

The company’s move into a 50,000-square-foot facility represents a significant increase in its physical manufacturing footprint and reinforces its commitment to Detroit.

Grounded Strengthens Commercial Leadership

As it expands its fleet business, Grounded has also strengthened its commercial leadership team.

The company recently hired Drew Snow, formerly of Adrian Steel, as Director of International Sales.

Snow will focus on expanding Grounded’s fleet business and helping bring its modular vehicle platform to customers in new international markets.

The appointment comes as Grounded prepares to scale its commercial operations alongside increased manufacturing capacity.

Grounded Production to Ramp Through 2027

Grounded is scheduled to begin production at its new Detroit facility in August 2026.

Production capacity is expected to increase through 2027 as the company works to fulfill existing commitments, launch the new box platform and support a growing pipeline of enterprise and municipal fleet customers.

The combination of new funding, expanded manufacturing capacity and a broader vehicle platform could position Grounded to compete for a larger share of the rapidly evolving commercial mobility market.

What Grounded’s Expansion Means for the EV Fleet Market

Grounded’s strategy reflects a broader shift in commercial transportation: fleet operators increasingly need vehicles designed around specific business functions rather than standardized configurations.

A modular, software-defined vehicle architecture can potentially allow companies to adapt vehicle configurations to different applications while reducing the need for entirely new vehicle designs.

By combining modular manufacturing, connected software, fleet management and electric vehicle technology, Grounded is seeking to create a flexible platform for businesses and institutions operating mobile services.

The launch of its vehicle-agnostic box platform also expands the company’s strategy beyond an exclusively electric vehicle offering, allowing it to address commercial applications involving both EV and ICE vehicle platforms.
