Kenya-based Fikra API has unveiled a new AI inference platform designed to make artificial intelligence more accessible and affordable for developers, startups, and businesses across Africa. By offering localized pricing and mobile money payment options, the company aims to remove some of the biggest barriers preventing African innovators from building AI-powered applications.

Founded earlier this year by James Miano, Fikra API provides an OpenAI-compatible inference API, allowing developers to integrate advanced large language models into their applications without changing existing workflows. The platform offers functionality similar to major AI providers while tailoring pricing, payments, and token usage to suit African markets.

Making AI More Accessible in Africa

According to founder James Miano, many African developers face financial obstacles when trying to access leading AI platforms.

He explained that popular AI providers often require developers to maintain a minimum account balance of around US$20 before accessing their APIs. While this amount may seem modest in developed markets, it represents a significant expense for many developers across Africa.

Beyond the initial cost, developers must also manage expensive token consumption, especially when using advanced AI models, resulting in frequent account top-ups that increase overall development costs.

Solving the Payment Challenge

Fikra API is also addressing another major issue—payment accessibility.

Most global AI service providers require payments through international credit or debit cards, which remain inaccessible to many individuals and startups across Africa. Instead, mobile money services dominate everyday transactions in several African countries.

To bridge this gap, Fikra API integrates Paystack, enabling payments through M-Pesa and other mobile money platforms available across multiple sub-Saharan African markets. This allows developers to purchase AI credits using payment methods they already rely on.

Early Growth and Proprietary AI Models

Although the company is still in its early stages, Fikra API has already begun gaining traction. The startup reportedly signed up its first ten users within days of launching the platform.

In addition to providing access to existing language models, the company has developed two proprietary AI models:

  • A custom embeddings model optimized for inference.
  • Fikra Nano 1B, an in-house fine-tuned model built using a ternary weight architecture.

According to Miano, the ternary weight optimization pipeline gives the startup a technical advantage rarely seen among early-stage AI infrastructure providers.

Built for African Developers

Fikra API currently operates in Kenya, with payment capabilities extending to several countries through Paystack’s regional infrastructure.

The company says its primary audience includes developers, startups, and businesses throughout Africa that have access to a smartphone and mobile money services.

The platform follows a straightforward pricing model, charging US$1 for every two million tokens without separating input and output token costs. This simplified pricing structure is intended to make budgeting easier for developers building AI-powered applications.

While the company remains in its pre-revenue phase, commercial expansion is now underway following the official launch of the platform.

Focus on Faster Developer Adoption

Looking ahead, Fikra API is concentrating on improving the developer onboarding experience.

The company believes that reducing the time between user registration and a developer’s first successful API request is essential for increasing adoption. It continues refining this process to ensure new users can begin building applications quickly.

Another priority is expanding awareness among developers across Africa. According to the company, many of its target users are not always reached through traditional technology media, making grassroots community engagement and direct outreach important parts of its growth strategy.

Supporting Africa’s Growing AI Ecosystem

As demand for artificial intelligence solutions continues to rise across Africa, platforms like Fikra API are working to lower financial and technical barriers for local innovators. By combining affordable pricing, OpenAI-compatible infrastructure, and mobile money payments, the Kenyan startup hopes to empower more developers and startups to create AI-powered products tailored for African markets.
